Real-Time Stream Transcoding

Driven by expanding content libraries, improved wireless network speeds and increased consumer expectation for anytime, anywhere video access; the supply and demand for mobile video streaming and mobile video broadcast content continues to grow.

According to Juniper Research, total worldwide revenue for streamed mobile TV services is expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2011, and revenue for mobile broadcast TV services is expected to reach $11.7 billion for the same time frame; requiring real-time transactions running 24/7 delivering high volumes of streaming media content.

RipCode’s Real-Time Stream Transcoding Application targets mobile video streaming and mobile TV broadcast providers, giving their customers industry-leading video quality, achieved through RipCode optimized codecs. Transcoding from satellite and studio feeds to mobile broadcast and mobile 3GP streaming; RipCode supports a variety of current and next generation mobile delivery networks including: 3GPP and 3GPP2, DVB-H, MBMS, ATSC and MediaFlo.

RipCode’s high density transcoding appliance supports multi-channel ingest up to (8) simultaneous single-or multi-program streams, and can perform up to (16) QVGA or (16) CIF transcoded streaming outputs per appliance in a Real-Time Stream deployment with future support for up to (30) QVGA or (72) QCIF outputs.

As video transcoding becomes a critical infrastructure component for today’s new media companies, RipCode is dedicated to ensuring the ongoing reliability and availability of our product line, limiting visible service interruptions and ensuring our customer’s seamless business operations. RipCode transcoding solutions are designed for high availability through redundant components and automated load balancing using an efficient device and system workflow mechanism. With a minimum MTBF of 100,000 hours, RipCode’s video transcoding appliances have an extremely long shelf life requiring minimal ongoing maintenance. And, RipCode’s DSP-based processors reduce power draw, resulting in typical power consumption of 90 watts, operating at half the power of comparable solutions.

Real-Time Stream Transcoding Components

Video Feed Ingest

The Video Feed Ingest is a pre-configured, plug-and-play 1RU SDI capture solution which is an optional component for a RipCode Real-Time Stream Transcoding system. This feature provides full-resolution ingest of premium quality audio and video via an input channel of SD SDI with embedded audio.

Video Transcoding Appliance

The Video Transcoding Appliance is the heart of the Real-Time Stream Transcoding system that performs high concurrency transcode and delivery of video content.
